Stranded vs solid — which to choose
Stranded copper THHN is more flexible and easier to pull through conduit — the preferred choice for most installations where the wire will be routed through bends or longer runs. Solid copper THHN offers a more rigid conductor that holds its shape, making it the standard for short runs and terminations at breaker panels. Both are suitable for residential and commercial conduit installations per NEC Article 310.
Recommended applications
- Residential and commercial building wiring in conduit
- Raceway and tray installations in industrial facilities
- Panel board and switchboard wiring
- AC wiring in solar installations (inverter to main panel)
- Motor control and machine tool wiring
- Branch circuit wiring in commercial buildings

Frequently asked questions
Can THHN wire be used for direct burial?
No. THHN wire is rated for conduit and raceway installations only. For direct burial, UF-B cable or UL4703 PV wire (for solar DC applications) is required.
What is the difference between THHN and THWN?
THHN is rated for dry locations at 90°C. THWN-2 is also rated for wet locations at 75°C. Many wires carry a dual THHN/THWN-2 rating, making them suitable for both environments.
Is THHN wire used in solar installations?
THHN is used for AC wiring on the output side of the inverter (inverter to main panel). For DC wiring between solar panels, UL4703 PV wire is required. See our Copper PV Wire collection.
